The Malaysian kitchen has changed faster than Malaysian kitchen wiring. A kitchen from 2005 was wired for a rice cooker and a kettle. Today the same two sockets are feeding an air fryer, an induction hob, a coffee machine and a dish dryer — often through a power strip. That's how switch plates end up warm, and warm is one step before scorched.
The numbers that matter
A standard 13A socket delivers about 3,000 watts at most. One kettle (2,200W) plus one air fryer (1,800W) on the same double socket is already past the limit of the single circuit behind it. The breaker may hold — breakers protect the cable, not the socket — while the socket contacts and the power strip quietly cook.
Four warning signs your kitchen circuit is struggling
- A switch plate or plug that's warm after normal use.
- Brown or yellow discolouration around socket faces.
- The breaker trips when two specific appliances run together.
- Lights dim for a moment when the kettle or hob kicks in.
Any one of these is worth an inspection. Two or more means stop using the heavy appliances together until it's checked.
What a proper kitchen upgrade looks like
The gold standard is boringly simple: each fixed high-draw appliance — induction hob, built-in oven, water heater — gets its own dedicated circuit from the DB, and counter sockets are split so the kettle corner and the air-fryer corner aren't sharing one cable. In most terrace houses this is a one-day job with minimal chasing, because the DB is usually close to the kitchen.
About power strips
A power strip in a kitchen isn't automatically dangerous — a good one feeding a blender and a phone charger is fine. The dangerous pattern is a strip feeding heating appliances: kettles, fryers, toasters, rice cookers. Heating elements pull maximum current for minutes at a time, and most strips are rated for far less than their sockets suggest. If a heating appliance lives on your counter, it deserves a wall socket of its own.
